The original dwelling dates back to 1904. It has always been in the Macaskill family and was redeveloped as Ardhasaig House after the death of Duncan Macaskill, Katie’s Grand Uncle. Duncan served in Gallipoli during World War I and, on his return to Harris, vowed never to leave the island again. He opened a general store in Tarbert and ran it until the age of 96! Some of Duncan’s war medals can still be seen in the hotel. Many of the house’s original features such as the purple-tiled fireplace in the lounge and the main staircase have been retained and contribute to its distinctive character.
